Qiang Tang (“Northern Plain”) Nature Reserve. Nagqu. The Qiang Tang reserve lies in the northern Tibetan Plateau, and is the third-largest land nature reserve in the world. With more recently-established adjoining reserves, there is now a total of 496,000 km2 (191,507 sq. miles) of connected Nature Reserves, which represent an area almost as large as Spain. The reserve is home to only a few Tibetan nomads and various park staff hired to prevent poaching. The area is a high-altitude plateau with shrubland and grasslands mainly dominated by Stipa grasses and Kobresia species (“bog sedges”). Some of the last remaining herds of wild ungulates are found here: wild yak (Bos grunniens), Tibetan wild ass or kiang (Equus kiang),  Himalayan blue sheep or Bharal (Pseudois nayaur),  Argali (Ovis ammon),  Mongolian gazelle (Procapra gutturosa) and Tibetan antelope or chiru (Pantholops hodgsonii).  Predators include snow leopards, Tibetan wolves, Turkestan lynx and Tibetan blue bears. Namtso Lake (“Heavely Lake “). Namtso is a salt lake, and the largest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. It is the second-largest lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Namtso has five uninhabited islands of reasonable size. Historically, these islands were used for spiritual retreat by pilgrims who walked over the lake’s frozen surface at the end of winter, carrying their food with them. They would spend the summer there, unable to return to shore again until the water freezes the following winter. The lake is located approximately 112 kilometres (70 mi) NW of Lhasa in Nacqu Prefecture. (extravagantyak.com).
